How to Identify Fox Tracks

We have already known the first steps in finding the tracks of most Westchester animals in the wild. In most cases, they vary according to the sizes of their footprints, gaits and habitats. Has anybody here wanted to catch a fox? Just how can you exactly tell the difference between a New York fox than that of an ordinary canine’s tracks anyway?

First impression
The shape of a Westchester fox’s footprints may appear slightly oval as with the rest of the wild canines. They are smaller than your dog’s, have four visible toes in them and each toe is like a shape of a triangle. You will not see claw prints as often because they are quite furry creatures and the furs cover those feet most of the time. Aside from these, New York gray foxes tend to retract their claws.

• Average footprint size falls under 1.75”-2.5” L and 1.5”-2” W (Red fox)
• As for the gray counterpart, the feet measures around 1.25-1.75” L and 1”-1.75” W
• Foxes don’t weigh too much, which makes their heel pads quite invisible unless they stepped on a very muddy ground

Walk the mile
Foxes move about in different motion, which depends on their substrate, location and stance. Typically, a Westchester fox’s gait consists of gallops, lopes, walks and the so-called foxtrots. Red and gray varieties often go places in such a way that their hind foot lands just to where the front had stepped into. As both of them can walk on logs and even on top of the walls, a New York gray fox has a peculiar way of climbing up on a tree to get some sleep.

Look for the sign
Foxes can be very sneaky and you may not know if you’re seeing one unless you look at the signs more closely. And for that, you have to search everywhere for some scats. This time rather, you have to know the difference between your usual housedog and a wild Westchester canine’s scat.

• The fox’s scat shape is slightly segmented
• It is often tapered and kind of ropey
• Size: 3”-6” L and 3/8”-5/8” in Diameter
• Red foxes always have that musky odour
• Fox scat normally comes will less disgusting odour as compared to your pet dog’s

Where else?
If you have fruit bushes in your New York garden, most likely it will become a fox’s favourite spot. You won’t find one in highly populated places even if the place is within the rural area. Foxes belong in the wilds and it is best for them to be taken back to where they belong in case you’ve seen one.
